Materials for
“Watercolor class”
Tomball College, Continuing Education Class

The items on this list are merely suggestions. If you have some paints and brushes already, we'll start with what you have. By no means feel obligated to get ALL of these things at once. You can BUILD your supplies as you learn more and your needs grow.

  1. Paint brushes: - please get good quality watercolor brushes that have good tips:
    1. Rounds: # 1, #5, #8, #12, #18
  2. Paper: Watercolor paper in Blocks or binder, 140lb weight, 20 sheets, 18X24 is optimal. Not too rough, not too smooth, find a paper with a medium tooth that you feel comfortable with.
  3. Paint: Please pick pure colors on the Primaries such as:
    1. Pure Cadmium Yellow,
    2. light Phthalo Blue,
    3. Pure Cadmium Red.... then also get these essentials:
    4. Naples yellow, (optional)
    5. Cobalt blue,
    6. Paynes Grey
    7. Hookers Green,
    8. Olive Green, (optional)
    9. Burnt Umber,
    10. Raw Sienna,
    11. Van Dyck Brown Carmine,
    12. Alizarin Crimson, (optional)
    13. And a purple of your liking...like Brilliant Violet
  4. Paint mixing dish with compartments around the perimeter...the bigger the better.
  5. A bottle of liquid Frisket- removable: a plastic paint blocker that you put on the paper before painting....
  6. Paper towels and
  7. Q-tips,
  8. An ordinary yellow sponge
  9. Dishtowel,
  10. A medium pencil, (I use mechanical pencils, 3mm, 5mm, 7mm), and a
  11. Soft eraser
  12. An artist tackle box, to put it all in. Sometimes you'll have to get A separate box for the brushes....
  13. One plastic container for water…like a large peanut butter jar.

I do not use any "props" like ocean sponges to simulate clouds or trees.... You can add those things if you like, after a little experience.

Then, pick one or two colors that jump out at you, that "speak to your heart". They will be your "play" colors.... but please no more than three.
